Stephane Samir Binong scored a hat-trick as Khumaltar Youth Club shocked leaders Jawalakhel Youth Club 4-2 in the Martyrs Memorial A-Division League in Satdobato, Lalitpur on Friday.
Jawalakhel were looking to extend their lead at the top of the table with a morale-boosting victory against a bottom-placed side but Khumaltar showed no mercy at the ANFA Complex.
Jawalakhel that opened a five-point gap a week ago lost their momentum and have now collected just one point from the possible 12 points.
They were licking the wounds of Tuesday’s shock 2-1 loss against a lowly Nepal Police Club and Cameroonian forward Binong rubbed salt on it, opening the scoring in the 20th minute finishing clinically across the two defenders after he was set up by Messouke Oloumou.
Jawalakhel were gifted the equaliser in the 43rd minute by an own goal from Rohit Subba, who ended up shooting into his own net as he tried to clear the ball from the goal line following a mix-up in the crowded six-yard box.
That should have instilled hopes of a comeback for Jawalakhel. Instead, they quickly fell behind when Binong rounded defender Chhiring Lama before coolly finishing a counter attack after a Rajiv Lopchan launched the assault.
Binong then added his third goal of the game—season’s second hat-trick—six minutes after the restart as he slipped behind catnapping Jawalakhel defenders to volley a pass from Oloumou from a close range.
This edition’s first hat-trick had come on April 11 when Olawale Afeez scored four goals in Khumaltar’s 7-3 humiliation by reigning champions Machhindra Club.
Binod KC reduced the deficit to 3-2 in the third minute of second-half stoppage time with his right-footed semi-volley.
But league’s top scorer Oloumou killed off the drama in the dying seconds, chipping over Jawalakhel goalkeeper Anish Deula for his 12th goal after good work from Binong.
Despite the slump, Jawalakhel managed to hold the top spot for now, with a chasing pack of in-form Church Boys United, Three Star Club and Satdobato Youth Club all in action on Saturday.
The win moved Khumaltar out of the relegation zone and up to 11th position.
At the Dasharath Stadium, Himalayan Sherpa Club defeated Police 2-1 and sent them back to the drop zone.
Abayomi Oluwaseun Fakunle put Sherpa in front in the 14th minute placing a header past Police goalkeeper Shatrudhan Chaudhary.
Saujan Rai put Police back in the game in the 30th minute, sending in the rebound after Serge Dicka’s header hit the post.
But Amrit Shrestha ended Police’s fight back heading in a corner in the 51st minute.
Police are in the 13th position with 15 points. Sherpa climbed up to seventh position.
