International football governing body FIFA on Saturday lifted suspension on All India Football Federation (AIFF) enabling them to participate in international football tournaments.
The decision meant India would now be eligible to contest in SAFF Women’s Championship set to take place from September 6 to 19 in Kathmandu.
FIFA on August 16 had decided to impose a ban on India football governing body citing it was under “undue influence from third parties”. The Supreme Court of India had disbanded AIFF and formed a three-member committee to govern the game, amend AIFF's constitution and conduct fresh elections. The court had concluded that sitting AIFF president Praful Patel was illegitimate for the position.
The suspension was lifted after India fulfilled FIFA’s condition to terminate the court formed committee and AIFF administration was given authority to run the country’s football affair.
“The decision was taken after FIFA received confirmation that the mandate of the committee of administrators that was set up to assume the powers of the AIFF Executive Committee had been terminated and that the AIFF administration had regained full control of the AIFF’s daily affairs,” reads a statement by FIFA. “FIFA and the AFC will continue to monitor the situation and will support the AIFF in organising its elections in a timely manner.”
India were also set to host FIFA FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2022 scheduled from October 11-30 in different cities. After suspending the membership of India, FIFA had said that India would be ineligible to host the event. But after lifting the suspension the U-17 Women’s World Cup will take place in India as planned.
