Khumaltar Youth Club secured the second spot available for the top division of domestic football, edging Ranipokhari Corner Team (RCT) on head-to-head after they beat Samajik Youth Club 2-1 in the last match of the Martyrs Memorial 'B' Division League on Sunday.
Both Khumaltar and RCT were tied on 22 points but the former finished second on the standings due to head-to-head superiority as they had registered a 3-1 victory in their game played on March 3.
Khumaltar's victory not only earned them a promotion but also dealt a blow to Samajik who were also relegated to 'C' division with 14 points. The top two teams of the league earned promotion while the bottom two teams were relegated to 'C' division.
Church Boys Club (CBC) were the other team to secure promotion in the 'A' Division as the champions with 29 points while Jhamsikhel Youth Club were the other relegated side finishing at the bottom of the 14-team standing on nine points.
RCT, one of the oldest and most successful teams in domestic football, could have secured promotion had they defeated Tushal Youth Club in their last game played at the Dasharath Stadium. But they settled for a goalless draw despite a dominant performance throughout the match.
In the match played simultaneously at the ANFA Complex, Satdobato, Sabin KC gave an early 14th minute lead to Khumaltar before Suresh Khatri restored parity 12 minutes into the second half. But Bikash Limbu gifted an own goal in the 90th minute as it looked like Samajik would avoid relegation.
Khumaltar were promoted to B division as the winners of 2014 'C' Division League. They were one of the title contenders in the last edition as well and finished second. However, only the winners of the last edition were promoted to the top tier of football.
