Nepal Police Club and Sudurpaschim Province registered their second victories of the Prime Minister Cup Men’s National Cricket Tournament on Tuesday, while Bagmati Province bounced back from their opening loss to defeat Madhesh by 86 runs.
Police defeated Koshi Province by seven wickets at the Mulpani Cricket Ground despite Sujan Thapaliya scoring a blistering century.
Sent in to bat first after losing the toss, Thapaliya smashed 105 runs off 126 balls but Koshi could only manage a 166 total after their other batters failed to impress against a star-studded departmental side.
Thapaliya’s innings featured four boundaries and eight maximums and was the sole hitter for Koshi, with only Avyash Timalshina (23) and opener and captain Ankit Subedi (10) touching the double digit figures.
Police’s Karan KC took 3-28 that also included the wicket of Thapaliya, who was caught by Sunil Dhamala (2-12) in the first ball of the 47th over.
Lalit Rajbanshi also picked two wickets for Police, while Rashid Khan, Sagar Dhakal and Kushal Bhurtel pocketed one apiece.
In the chase, Police lost openers Bhurtel—who also opens the batting for the national team—for 20 and Sunil Dhamala (16) to Kamal Khatri.
Dilip Nath then walked back, caught by Khatri off Sonu Mandal, adding 31 runs in the 17th over.
But an unbeaten half-century from Arjun Saud (63-ball 62), accompanied by Dipendra Singh Airee’s 38 not out off 17 deliveries helped Police chase down the target in 23.1 overs.
Police had defeated Bagmati by 68 runs in the inaugural match of the tournament on Saturday.
Bagmati put that pain behind to record their first victory of the season but they owed their win to Pratish GC’s half-century and Surya Tamang’s 6-18.
Bagmati were in deep trouble at 103-7 in 28 overs but GC came to the strike and resurrected the innings with his 55-ball 59 and took Bagmati to a fighting 190 total.
Rupesh Singh and Arniko Yadav took two wickets for Madhesh. Rajesh Yadav, Ranjit Kumar, Harishankar Shah and Pawan Sarraf bagged one wicket each.
GC also impressed with his bowling as he dealt an early blow to Madhesh chase, removing opener Anil Sah (0) and captain Shah (1).
Ishan Pandey then did the further damage claiming the prized wickets of Sarraf (45) and Sah’s opening partner Mayan Yadav (31).
But it was Tamang who shone the brightest at the Mulpani Cricket Ground. Tamang took a six-wicket haul that also included a hat-trick to bully the Madhesh lower orders. He only gave away 18 runs in his magical nine-over spell that also featured three maiden overs.
Tamang now has 12 wickets to his name this season, following his three-wicket hauls against Police and Armed Police Force Club.
Sarraf and Mayan had put a 61-run stand to revive the Madhesh case after losing Sah and Shah, but once Pandey ended their stay, Madhesh failed to cope with Tamang’s venomous spin.
Tamang first got rid of Bishal Patel (0) and Arniko (3) in the 21st over and 27th over and cut off the rest of the tail in the 29th over, dismissing Rupesh (2), Rajesh (0) and Samsad Ansari (0) in the successive deliveries to accomplish a hat-trick before stinging Kumar three balls later as Madhesh were bowled out for 104.
It was Madhesh’s second straight loss after three matches. They had opened the PM Cup with a victory over Koshi.
Sudurpaschim were the day’s other winners. They defeated Karnali Province by 134 runs at the Siddharthanagar Cricket Stadium, courtesy of half-centuries from their openers Khadak Bohora and Tek Rawat, and Kiran Thagunna.
Bohara cracked 80 runs off 114 balls and Tek scored 59 runs off 91 balls as the opener duo gave Sudurpaschim a solid start with a 138-run stand after being invited to bat first.
Dipendra Rawat broke their opening stand removing Tek in the 28th over but Bohora continued his show until the last ball of the 46th over, when he was bowled by Dinesh Adhikari.
Thagunna then completed his fifty facing 33 deliveries to guide Sudurpaschim to 277-5.
Karnali never looked comfortable in the run chase and were bowled out for 143, credit to an early strike from Bikash Aagri (2-27) and Sher Malla’s four-wicket haul.
Diwan Pun top scored for Karnali with 38 runs.
Sudurpaschim are in the second position in the ten-team standings which is led by APF Club. Police are third. All three teams have four points.
