National captain Rubina Chhetri guided Province 1 to a thumping nine-wicket win over Lumbini Province as they registered their first victory at the completion of the second round in the Lalitpur Mayor Women's Twenty20 Championship at the TU Cricket Ground in Kirtipur on Thursday.
Chhetri, also the captain of the team, scored an unbeaten 48 runs as Province 1 raced to 81-1 after Lumbini were restricted to 79-6 at close.
The first victory after the second match lifted Province 1, who faced a six-wicket defeat to Nepal APF Sports Club in their first match, to third place in the standings with two points. Sudur Paschim Province and Lumbini both have equal two points but they are second and fourth, respectively, in the standings on the basis of their run rates.
Hosts Lalitpur Mayor's XI are yet to open scoring at the standings and are languishing at the bottom of the five-team contest. The top two sides at the completion of the round robin league would vie for the title.
Electing to bat first, Lumbini came up with a disastrous performance as only two batters managed to score in double digit figures. Opener Laxmi Chaudhary hit 23 runs and former national captain Nary Thapa scored 31 runs as other batters failed to make remarkable contributions with bat.
Chaudhary hit four fences facing 26 deliveries before she was stumped by Kajal Shrestha off Hermayi Roy. Thapa hit four boundaries in her 30-ball knock before being bowled by Sabnam Rai. The other opener Nitu Bhandari hit 8 off 20 before she was run out.
Province 1 bowler Rai grabbed three wickets in her four-over spell. She conceded five runs with a maiden over. Captain Chhetri and Roy picked one wicket each.
Chasing the target, Province 1 openers Shrestha and Chhetri played a 42-run stand for the first wicket before the former was dismissed on 20 runs. Shrestha hit three boundaries before being trapped leg before by Kritika Marasini.
Captain Chhetri, who was two runs short of half century remaining unbeaten, hit four fences in her 49-ball knock. She was also named the player-of-the-match. Apsari Begam remained not out on nine runs.
Lumbini bowler Marasini claimed the only wicket for the team.
There will be two matches on Friday with APF taking on Lalitpur Mayor's XI in the early kick off before Sudur Paschim vying against Province 1.
