The two teams will meet again in the playoffs on Thursday.Sports Bureau
Both the Titans and the Warriors were in the contention for a play-offs birth with Warriors depending on the result between the Titans and the Blasters to secure their passage. For the Warriors to enter the play-offs, the Titans had to lose or win by a small margin against the Blasters. Instead, the Titans produced a scintillating batting display which not only won them the match but also boosted their net run rate in the bargain, which helped them edge out the Warriors.
Titans, having won the toss, decided to field first and restricted the Blasters to 133 for eight from their allotted 20 overs. They then reached their target inside 12 overs, losing six wickets. The victory with 50 balls remaining meant the Titans had a net run rate of 0.475 as compared to 0.39 of the Warriors.
Blasters’ innings was built chiefly around a 44-ball 67 by Harsh Honk. The Indian scored runs at a strike rate of more than 150 after the team had lost their first two wickets rather cheaply. Aftabuddin Ahmed was caught off the very first delivery for a duck, while Shankar Rana made two runs from 14 balls. With wickets falling, Honk took matters into his hands and smashed six boundaries and five sixes to steer the Blasters’ innings. He was caught behind in the 13th over off a Dipesh Shrestha's delivery.
Another Indian, Shivam Singh made 37 runs and skipper Siddhant Lohani made 11 as the Blasters put up 133 runs on board. Muhammad Zaid Alam claimed four wickets for the Titans, while Kishor Mahato took two.
Chasing the Blasters’ total, Titans made a breezy start with opener Muhammad Zaid Alam and Lokesh Bam putting on quick runs. Pakistan’s Alam made 24 from 10 balls, while Bam hit two sixes in his 13 from five balls. Bam was the first to fall in the second over after an opening stand of 26 runs. Skipper Pradeep Singh Airee was the next to return to the pavilion, scoring five runs.
After Alam was caught in the fifth over, the middle order pair of India’s Puneet Mehra and Afghanistan’s Noman Khan put up a match-winning partnership of 34 runs from just 17 balls. Mehra was caught by Rabindra Shahi off Kamal Khatri's delivery for 32. Sunil Dhamala was short of his crease when he was run out for just two and Khan was trapped leg before wicket on 35. But Puspa Thapa's eight-ball 18 runs cameo meant the Titans not only won the match but also went past the Warriors' net run rate.
Despite the defeat, the Blasters, who came second on the points table, have already secured their place in the playoffs. The two teams will meet again in the playoffs on Thursday. The winner of the playoffs will meet Chitwan Rhinos in the final to be played on Saturday.
The Rhinos reached the final after finishing first on the points table with five wins from as many matches. The table-topping team was guaranteed a final berth with second and third-placed teams meeting in the playoffs for the other spot in the final.
