Malaysian national cricket team have confirmed their participation for the second edition of the Manmohan Memorial One-Day International Cricket League set from December 31 to January 18 at the Inaruwa Stadium in Sunsari.
According to Biplav Ghosh, the tournament director, Malaysian full-strength squad are set to compete at the tournament as Malaysia XI. "They will also play three Twenty20 International matches with Nepal's national team once the tournament is over," he said, adding that Cricket Association of Nepal had coordinated with the Malaysia Cricket Board to bring the team to Nepal.
CAN General Secretary Ashok Nath Pyakurel admitted that Malaysian Board has proposed to play T20 match against Nepal, but the details are yet to be finalised. "They are in discussion with us for participation in the Inaruwa tournament. They have also proposed for a few Twenty20 matches. But it is yet to be finalised."
"As they are visiting Nepal for an invitational tournament, we can finalise about the T20 matches only once we get the details of their team and the duration of their visa. If they send a full-strength squad, we could field the national squad. Otherwise, we should consider fielding other teams," he said.
Apart from the Malaysian team, three departmental teams from Nepal—Tribhuvan Army Club, Nepal Armed Police Force Club and Nepal Police Club—seven provincial teams and host team of Inaruwa will participate in the tournament.
The tournament is jointly organised by Manmohan Memorial Cricket Center Province 1 Committee and Inaruwa Municipality.
According to Ghosh, the tournament will be played in the league-plus-knockout format. The 12 teams will be divided into four groups, with each group winner progressing to the semi-finals.
Inaruwa Municipality Mayor Rajan Mehta said that the local government was ready to provide all kinds of support to make the tournament a grand success.
"The municipality had provided all kind of support in the first edition of the tournament as well," he said.
He also lamented the lack of support from the sports authority to develop sports facilities in Inaruwa.
National Sports Council Member Secretary Ramesh Kumar Silwal thanked the organisers for hosting the 50-over tournament.
"While there are lots of T20 franchise tournaments, there is a drought of 50-over format. The long format will obviously be a reality check for the players," said Silwal, adding that the event will also serve as a platform for emerging talents to show their potential in the game due to inclusion of all seven provincial teams.
The winners and the runners up will bag purses of Rs405,000 and Rs205,000 while the losing semi-finalists will receive Rs60,000 each. The man-of-the-series will walk away with Rs55,000. The expected expenses for the tournament is Rs12.5 million.
