Nepal suffered their second successive defeat on Wednesday at the ongoing Under-19 One Day Challengers Trophy in Hyderabad, as India's 'A' side thrashed Nepal by 107 runs. The defeat has reduced Nepal's aspirations to progress to the tournament decider in the four-team contest.
After winning the toss, Nepal chose to bowl at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium. India ‘A’ amassed 248 on the board in 48.2 overs. Nepal exhibited a lacklustre performance with the bat and were bundled out for 140-9 in their 50 overs.
Teen prodigy Bishal Bikram KC (71), also the skipper of the Under-16 side, was the only batsman to stand out who contributed more than half of the total runs Nepal could score.
KC, who took to the crease after the departure of skipper Rit Gautam (5), did not get formidable support from his partners. Nepal's downfall began early in the match as they were quickly reduced 6-2 at the end of the first over. Sheer Malla (21) and Akash Chand (19) were the only two reach double figures.
In the 18th over, Nepal were struggling at 49-6. A 56-run stand for the seventh wicket between Malla and KC for a while raised some hope for Nepal. But after Malla was trapped leg before in the 36th over, the visitors were still 143 runs short for the win. Nepal lost the remaining two wickets to finish their innings at 140-9 in 50 overs.
Lokesh Bam, Kushal Malla and Hari Bahadur Chauhan could not even open their accounts for Nepal before returning to the pavilion while Sagar Dhakal remained unbeaten without scoring a single run. Nitish Kumar Reddy and Sameer Rizvi picked two wickets each for India.
Earlier, after being put to bat, India were bowled out for 247 runs in 48.2 over. Captain and wicket-keeper Dhruv Chand Jurel top-scored for the hosts with 74 runs off 65 balls. Jurel clubbed three sixes and hit the fence on six occasions.
India themselves were 115-5 in the 25th over but a 92-run partnership between Jurel and Reddy (30) revived their innings.
Malla was the pick among the Nepali bowlers who scalped three wickets, while Akash Chand got two in his name. Pratis GC and Chauhan grabbed one wicket apiece. Nepal will next play against India ‘B’ in their last group match on Friday.
