Poet Nawaraj Parajuli, who is currently touring Australia as part of a poetry concert tour, performed at Sydney on Sunday. The poetry concert tour is being organised by the International Nepali Literature Society to mark the 204th birth anniversary of poet Bhanubhakta Acharya.
In the one-hour long event, Parajuli offered renditions of six of his poems accompanied by live music performed by flute player Samyak Maharjan.
Parajuli, who is an acclaimed, young Nepali poet, has won praise for his recently-published debut book, Sagarmatha Ko Gahirahi. The anthology of poems has been nominated for this year’s Madan Puraskar and Padmashree Puraskar—two of the nation’s most coveted literary awards.
Parajuli, who ventured out into poetry with the popular genre of Slam Poetry, is also the winner of the All Nepal Poetry Slam, 2014, and the recipient of Saatako Sahitya Puraskar. He is also active in Kathmandu’s theatre scene and performance arts.
At the event in Sydney, the organisers also honoured Parajuli for his contribution towards Nepali language and literature. The poet is currently on a six-city Australia tour and is being accompanied by flutist Samyak Maharjan, guitarist Chet Pun and poet Shuvechchhya Pradhan. Following two performances in Perth and Sydney, the tour will travel next to Canberra (on July 25), Brisbane (July 28), Adelaide (July 31) before wrapping up the tour with Melbourne show on August 5.
