BP Koirala in pictures
The Nepal Art Council hall in Babarmahal, which hosts the Nepal Cultural Museum, is exhibiting photographs of the late Prime Minister Bishweshwor Prasad Koirala
The photographs trace Koirala’s life from his childhood to the moment of his cremation at Pashupatinath Temple, giving audiences a chance to observe late Koirala’s life as a political leader, as a writer and as a common family man. In addition to this, the photographs also depict the glimpses of Nepal during his time, since throughout his active political career he was the central character of the country’s historical trajectory.
In one photo taken during Koirala’s visit to Israel, he is shown walking with Israeli kids laughing and hovering around him on a gravel road. In another, he’s passionately addressing a mass of political followers. In yet another, he is lying on a bed in his house, waiting to be injected by the doctor, bottles of medicines sprawling below.
Similarly, in an attempt to accentuate Koirala’s artistic personality, his portraits—painted by various artists, based on the themes of his literary works and political achievements—are also on display.
There were people from different walks of life visiting the exhibition, perhaps attracted by Koirala’s legacy. In one corner of the gallery, were a group of young people watching the photographs, captivated as much by Koirala’s charisma as by the opportunity to relive history. In another corner, a group of elderly were discussing among themselves the contexts of particular photographs.
The organisers have defined the exhibition as a commemoration of Koirala’s contribution to the country and an attempt to present his whole life story through a visual medium.
The exhibition lasts till August 17
