Mandala Theatre Nepal is set to stage ‘Bahuriya’, a socially charged drama that delves into the pressures of marriage and the constraints of rigid societal norms. The play will run from January 22 to February 12 at Mandala Theatre Nepal.
Written and directed by Suraj Yadav, with creative direction by Sarita Giri and production led by Buddhi Tamang, ‘Bahuriya’ explores the contrasting experiences of a man and a woman caught in the grip of patriarchal expectations.
The narrative centres on a forced marriage, abandonment, and an unexpected reunion years later, highlighting the emotional and psychological scars inflicted by societal pressure. Through intense interpersonal conflict and moral questioning, the play examines themes of justice, consent, and the human cost of tradition imposed without empathy.
Mandala Theatre Nepal describes ‘Bahuriya’ as a work that challenges audiences to reflect critically on social norms and individual freedom.
By presenting both male and female perspectives, the production aims to spark dialogue on the consequences of rigid customs and patriarchal control in Nepali society.
