Post Report
To mark the auspicious occasion of Nhu Daya Bhintuna 1146 and Mha Puja, a vibrant annual mandala competition will take place in Thecho, Lalitpur, on Wednesday, October 22.
Organised by Jhi Jhi Pucha, a local youth organisation, the event aims to promote the artistic and cultural traditions associated with the Newa community’s celebration of the New Year.
The competition will run for six hours, from 9 am to 3 pm, with a 30-minute break in between. The organisers will provide all necessary materials, including colours and drawing supplies. Participants are required to pay a registration fee of Rs1,000.
Three winning teams will be selected from the contestants. The first-place winner will receive Rs25,000, the second Rs15,000, and the third Rs10,000.
Request Maharjan, a member of Jhi Jhi Pucha, says, “The mandala competition has been our annual tradition since the organisation’s establishment in 2015, except during the Covid-19 years and Thecho’s 12 barhsa mela.”
He further adds, “Many people still confuse mandalas with rangoli. Through this event, we hope to raise awareness about the distinct cultural and spiritual essence of mandalas in the Newa tradition.”
With colourful patterns, symbolic design, and spirit of festivity, the competition continues to enrich Thecho’s New Year celebrations, preserving and promoting one of the community’s most cherished art forms.
