Sugarcane farmers protest in Capital demanding payments due
Farmers say that the 5-point agreement that they had signed with the government in January to resolve the payment issue among others has not been implemented.Post Report
Sugarcane farmers have once again resorted to protests after sugar mills failed to pay them their outstanding dues.
The farmers organised a protest programme at Maitighar in the Capital on Sunday saying that the government and sugar mill operators failed to abide by the five-point agreement they had reached in January to clear the dues owed to them.
Last December, hundreds of farmers from Sarlahi descended on the capital to exert pressure on the government to help them get the money owed to them by sugar factories.
Sugarcane farmers had withdrawn their indefinite protest on January 3 following the government’s assurance that it would have the defaulting sugar mills pay their outstanding dues by January 21. Eleven months since then, they are yet to be paid.
The farmers had planned to arrive in Kathmandu to hold the second phase of their protest back in March but the protest programme had been postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak.
