‘Are you a Snow Leopard?’ and ‘Namaste’ are illustration books for ages 2 to 5 and 0 to 3, respectively.van Doesburg Creative Works, a publishing house based in Switzerland, launched two children’s illustration books at an event held at Hotel Shanker, Kathmandu. The books were published in collaboration with Community Action Centre Nepal, a Kathmandu-based non-profit that advocates for women’s and children’s rights.
The book ‘Are you a Snow Leopard?’ is meant for children from ages two to five and tells a tale of a snow leopard who travels to meet a fellow snow leopard and, in the process, meets different animals primarily found in the mountains of Nepal.
The book is written by Sandra van Doesburg and edited by Niranjan Kunwar. The illustrations are done by Kanchan Burathoki. The book also features photos of renowned wildlife photographer Chungba Sherpa.
“Our other book, ‘Namaste’, is a high-contrast picture book that introduces children ages zero to three to Nepali elements,” said Sandra van Doesburg. “The book is for children ages 0 to three.
‘Namaste’ is also written by Sandra van Doesburg and edited by Niranjan Kunwar. The book’s illustrations are done by Karuna Giri.
Speaking at the launch event, Kunwar said, “We have focused on telling stories that are inclusive and highlight diversity. We hope the books help kids appreciate creativity and art.”
“Pictures have the ability to widen children’s imagination and can be used as tools to educate and raise awareness among children,” said Burathoki.
At the event, Sandra said that her team worked on the two books for two and a half years.
“Through our books, we want to ignite curiosity in children, become self-aware and confident,” she said.
Proceeds from the book sales will be used to fund Community Action Centre Nepal’s activities involving children.
