Demonstrators gathered at Maitighar Mandala on Friday, demanding justice for Ganesh Nepali, the ride-hailing driver who died after setting himself on fire outside the Department of Passports.
The protest was organised by people from Nepali's home district of Mugu, ride-hailing drivers and members of the Gen Z movement. After the demonstration at Maitighar, protesters attempted to march to Bir Hospital, where Nepali died while undergoing treatment, but were stopped by police at Bhadrakali.

The Scientific Socialist Student Union also staged a separate protest at Maitighar.
Protesters carried placards reading, "Down with the fascist government," "Provide compensation to the victim's family," and "Stop traffic terror".

Nepali, originally from Mugu and living in Bhaktapur with his wife and young daughter, earned a living as a ride-hailing driver.
He sustained severe burns after dousing himself with petrol and setting himself on fire outside the Department of Passports in Tripureshwor on Thursday. He died on Friday while receiving treatment at Bir Hospital.

According to police, the incident occurred after Kathmandu Metropolitan City Police placed a wheel lock on Nepali's motorcycle for alleged illegal parking and attempted to impound the vehicle. Nepali then took petrol from his motorcycle, poured it over himself and set himself on fire.
