A meeting of the Nepali Congress Central Working Committee on Sunday decided to extend the tenure of the executive committee of its sister wing Nepal Student Union by two months.
The term was added for the second time after the Nain Singh Mahar-led union failed to hold its general convention by Sunday.
The NC had extended the tenure of the incumbent committee by three months. The NSU statute sets a two-year tenure for the executive committee.
According to Congress central member Pradeep Paudel, the union has the fresh mandate to hold the general convention within two months.
The Central Working Committee also approved the NSU statute. Leaders of the rival faction in the opposition party, however, expressed displeasure at the move saying that the statute was approved without addressing their concerns. The rival faction led by Ram Chandra Poudel, that has the backing of the Koirala family, had demanded an ad-hoc committee for electing the leadership.
Leaders including Krishna Prasad Sitaula and Arjun Narsingh KC, however, were of the view that the term of the student wing should be added by six months. The meeting took the decision through a majority vote.
According to a party source, the establishment faction led by NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba wants to nominate the executive committee by averting the convention, which is the major worry of a majority of the rival faction leaders.
