Magar was elected unopposed as the fifth Speaker of Parliament as the candidate of ruling alliance proposed by CPN-UML Vice-Chairman Bidhya Bhandari and seconded by Rastriya Prajatantra Party leader Kunti Shahi and Chairman of Bahujan Shakti Party Bishwendra Pashwan. Her candidacywas also supported by major opposition Nepali Congress. Magar, who is a politburo member of UCPN (Maoist), is the first female and the youngest person to become Parliament Speaker.
She was elected from Rolpa Constituency-2 in second Constituent Assembly election. Earlier, she had served as vice-chairperson of second CA and as Minister for Youth and Sports in a government led by Jhala Nath Khanal of CPN-UML.
Talking to media after assuming the office, Magar said she will proceed the business of Parliament with the support from all the parties. “I will work together with all the parties representing in Parliament,” she said.
