Nepal can still compete in two AFC tournaments if FIFA’s suspension is lifted in time

The Asian Football Confederation has informed the All Nepal Football Association that Nepal’s national and club teams will be eligible for continental competitions if FIFA’s suspension is lifted before the deadlines for each tournament.
A June 27 letter by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), made public by ANFA on Tuesday, suggests that Nepal lost the opportunity for the AFC Women’s Champions League 2026/27.
But then, Nepal would have missed the tournament even if FIFA had not suspended ANFA. The Martyr’s Memorial ANFA Women’s League was postponed on the opening day, and there was no winner to represent Nepal in the AFC Women’s Champions League’s Preliminary Stage unless the AFC showed some flexibility.
However, Nepal still has the opportunity to send its teams for two tournaments—the 2027 AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup Qualifiers and the 2027 AFC U20 Asian Cup Qualifiers.
As per the letter signed by Datuk Seri Windsor John, general secretary at the AFC, and sent to Kiran Rai, ANFA’s general secretary, Nepal can participate in the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup Qualifiers if FIFA’s suspension is lifted by July 13, which is three days before the Preliminary Stage’s draw on July 16.
Similarly, Nepal can compete at the AFC U20 Asian Cup Qualifiers if the suspension is revoked by August 1, which is 30 days before the Qualifiers.
Nepal had submitted entries for the AFC competitions before FIFA’s suspension on June 24.
“Should the suspension on ANFA not be lifted by the dates indicated…its representative and club teams shall be removed from the relevant competitions,” AFC states in its recent letter.
ANFA has been suspended indefinitely for continuous third-party interference from the state authorities. The suspension can be lifted when two conditions are met.
The first requirement set by FIFA demands the full revocation of the National Sports Council’s decision of March 25, which included ANFA’s suspension and directives to amend the Statutes, without any conditions and the reinstatement of the current ANFA Executive Committee.
The second condition is allowing ANFA to finalise, as soon as possible and in accordance with its Statutes and regulations, the electoral process already initiated.
