Nepal to play West Indies in September
The 3-match T20I series, in the UAE, will mark a ‘pivotal moment’ in Nepal’s cricketing journey, CAN says.
Post Report
Revealing its calendar for 2025 in March, the Cricket Association of Nepal had announced it would organise a T20I series against a Full Member nation in the UAE in September. That plan is now confirmed.
Nepal will take on two-time T20 World Cup champions West Indies in a historic three-match T20I series in the United Arab Emirates this September. The announcement, jointly made by the cricket boards of Nepal and the West Indies on Thursday, has had fans waiting with bated breath.
“This landmark series marks a pivotal moment in Nepal’s cricketing journey as the team faces the ICC Cricket World Cup champions West Indies for the first time in a bilateral T20I series,” CAN said in a statement.
The three matches will be played at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, the venue to host the highest number of international matches, on September 27, 28 and 30. The UAE will serve as a neutral venue for the two sides while Nepal are the host.
“We acknowledge and thank the Emirates Cricket Board for facilitating this historic series,” read the statement by CAN.
The bilateral series will serve as Nepal’s preparation for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Asia–EAP Regional Qualification in October, featuring nine teams in Oman.
Nepal, Papua New Guinea, Qatar, the UAE, Malaysia, Kuwait, Japan and Samoa will visit the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula for the qualification, with three of them progressing to the World Cup being co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka in February-March 2026.
“The series represents a landmark opportunity for Nepal as it gears up for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier later this year,” Cricket West Indies (CWI) said in a statement. “The West Indies team, known for its rich legacy and dynamic style of play, is expected to field a competitive squad that will offer Nepal critical exposure ahead of their World Cup qualifying campaign.”
CWI also stated that the series was a part of their responsibility to contribute to the development of cricket beyond their borders.
“Supporting Nepal in this key phase of their cricketing journey not only builds the sport at the grassroots and international levels but also reminds us of the deep pride and honour associated with representing our nation and wearing our national colours,” CWI quoted their CEO Chris Dehring as saying. “We are proud to stand with Nepal at this moment in their history and look forward to exciting and competitive cricket in Sharjah.”
Meanwhile, CAN said the series will provide valuable international exposure to Nepali cricketers ahead of the T20 World Cup Qualifiers.
CWI has been increasing its support to Nepal over the years. They had also sent their second-best team for a five-match T20 series last year. Played at the Kirtipur-based TU International Cricket Ground in April and May of 2024, Nepal won the first and fifth games of the series.
Nepal and the West Indies have also met once in ODIs, during the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe in 2023. The West Indies had defeated Nepal by 101 runs at the time.
The upcoming series, CEO Chris Dehring added, “is more than just a set of international matches—it’s a celebration of the game’s expanding global footprint and a testament to what cricket represents: pride, purpose, and the power of unity.”
