Nepal’s star leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane on Saturday made the cut for the final list of players to be auctioned for the 10th edition of the lucrative Indian Premier League Twenty20 cricket tournament.
Lamichhane, who is currently under the closed camp training for the ICC World Cricket League Division 2 tournament scheduled for February 8-15 in Namibia, is only one of the two players from the ICC Associate nations to be in the list of 578 players cut short from over 1000 names listed initially. The other player from the Associate nation is Canadian wicketkeeper Tariq Hamza. The second IPL auction is scheduled for January 27-28 in Bengaluru.
With 18 players retained, 182 slots are up for grabs in the second auction for the eight-team tournament. In all, 62 capped Indians and 298 uncapped Indian cricketers will vie for the available slots with 182 capped overseas cricketers, 34 uncapped overseas players and two cricketers from Associate nations. Lamichhane is the first Nepali cricketer to be listed in IPL auction. Lamichhane also featured in Bangladesh Premier League draft but did not go under the hammer. Lamichanne said he registered for the IPL through an agent.
