Nagarkoti, 1st female NSC Member Secy
In its 66-year history, the National Sports Council (NSC) has got the first female Member Secretary after the Ministry for Youth and Sports (MoYS) appointed Sakuntala Nagarkoti to the post. The MoYS, which falls under the CPN-UML, appointed her under the party quota as has been the trend. She will take over the country’s sports governing body until the next decision is taken. Nagarkoti’s stay as the first female Member Secretary, however, can be short-lived if she is replaced by the Cabinet which holds the power to endorse the MoYS recommendation.
“I am obviously proud to be the first female Member Secretary. But I also expect you to be equally proud as well,” Nagarkoti said as she was given a warm welcome by the employees. The NSC was without its head after the end of Yubaraj Lama’s tenure. Lama’s four-year term expired on June 12 as he became the only second Member Secretary after Binod Shankar Palikhe to complete the full term.
A letter signed by MoYS Joint Secretary read that Nagarkoti was appointed to the post because it was “necessary to carry out NSC’s regular operation.” Nagarkoti assumed office on Monday. Youth and Sports Minister, who is the Chairman of the NSC, Purushottam Paudel had appointed Nagarkoti and Surendra Bahadur Hamal as members of the NSC on June 12, 2014. Paudel had also appointed Lama Tendi Sherpa as the vice-president of NSC.
“I have been given a huge responsibility to oversee the entire sports activity of the country. I will coordinate with all the organisations related to sports along with the Ministry to carry out my duties responsibly,” Nagarkoti said during the welcome programme.
“I will work in preserving the rights of the players and at the same time make the administration vibrant with the support from the employees apart from making the financial activities transparent,” added Nagarkoti.
Born in 2031 in Punarbas, Kanchanpur, Nagarkoti had participated in several national kabaddi and volleyball tournaments. She was the Dadeldhura District Sports Development Committee vice-president from 2006-2010 and has been leading the Dadeldhura District Volleyball Association since 2007.
