JSP-N and LSP-N merge, Upendra Yadav to lead unified party
Parties agree on name, umbrella as election symbol and central coordination committee.Post Report
Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal (JSP-N) and Loktantrik Samajbadi Party, Nepal (LSP-N) on Sunday officially merged following an agreement between JSP-N chair Upendra Yadav and LSP-N chair Mahantha Thakur.
The merged party will retain the name JSP-N and the umbrella as its election symbol. Yadav will serve as party chair, while Thakur will take the role of patron.
Under the merger agreement, a 43-member Central Coordination Committee will manage the party’s operations and select an 11-member secretariat from among its members. Until the two parties’ central committees are fully integrated, the coordination committee will act as the party’s decision-making body.
All affiliated bodies, departments, and sister organisations of both parties will function under the committee’s directives. Existing organisations will continue operations in their respective areas until full integration.
The party flag will feature three colours—red at the top, white in the middle, and green at the bottom—with a tilted umbrella at the centre. The merger is seen as a major step toward consolidating the parties’ structures and presenting a unified front in upcoming elections scheduled for March 5.
On December 28, a joint meeting of the office bearers from the two parties inked an agreement to reunify.
In August 2021, Thakur split the Janata Samajbadi Party and registered Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal (Loktantrik).
Thakur’s Rastriya Janata Party had earlier merged with Upendra Yadav’s Sanghiya Samajbadi Party in April 2020.
