Affordable places for Nepali students in Cape Town
A guide to budget-friendly, comfortable housing in the South African capital.
Post Report
Observatory
It is a lively, student-friendly suburb east of the University of Cape Town. It has a bohemian atmosphere with cafes, pubs, and affordable flats, and is connected by train and bus routes.
Pros
The Observatory is within walking distance of the University of Cape Town. Rent for shared apartments or student residences can range from R4,500 to R6,500 monthly. The Observatory railway station and UCT Jammies Shuttle make commuting convenient.
Cons
Due to its nightlife, the area can be noisy and crowded. Safety can be a concern, especially late at night, so students need to choose secure accommodation.
Mowbray
Mowbray is a mixed residential and commercial district in Cape Town’s southern suburbs. It is close to the University of Cape Town and public transport hubs.

Pros
Accommodation is more affordable than in central Cape Town, with shared flats costing around R4,000 to R6,000 monthly. It is well connected by buses, trains, and the UCT Jammie Shuttle, and shops, supermarkets, and eateries offer part-time jobs.
Cons
Some areas in Mowbray have safety issues and heavy traffic during peak hours. Housing is often older and less modern than in newer suburbs.
Bellville
It is a transport hub located northeast of Cape Town, with extensive train, bus, and taxi connections. It hosts several Cape Peninsula University of Technology campuses and many student residences.

Pros
Rent is lower than in central Cape Town, with shared student housing available from around R3,500 to R5,000 per month. The area is well connected through Bellville Station and bus networks. Local shopping centres and retail areas provide good opportunities for part-time jobs.
Cons
It is far from UCT, making commuting long and sometimes inconvenient. It is less central for cultural activities, and safety can be a concern in certain areas, especially around transport hubs at night.
Rondebosch
Rondebosch is a leafy, suburban area located just south of Cape Town’s city centre. It is known for its proximity to the University of Cape Town (UCT). It offers a safe and peaceful environment with tree-lined streets, parks, and easy access to public transport.

Pros
Rondebosch is ideal for students because it is close to UCT, making commuting quick and easy. The suburb has affordable student housing options, shared apartments, and hostels.
Cons
Being a popular student area, some accommodation can be competitive and slightly more expensive than in other suburbs further from the university. Nightlife and entertainment options are limited within the suburb.
Claremont
Claremont is a well-established suburb located south of Cape Town’s city centre. It is known for its shopping hubs, tree-lined streets, and easy access to public transport, making it convenient for students attending universities in the area.

Pros
Claremont offers a variety of affordable rental options, including shared apartments and student housing. The suburb has supermarkets, cafés, and shopping centres such as Cavendish Square, which provide easy access to daily necessities.
Cons:
Being slightly further from UCT than Rondebosch or Observatory, commuting may take a little longer, especially during peak hours. While there are social spaces, the suburb is quieter in the evenings.
