Affordable places for Nepali students in Darwin
A guide to budget-friendly, comfortable housing in this Australian city.
Post Report
Palmerston
Palmerston is about 20 km southeast of Darwin’s city centre and offers a more affordable lifestyle than central Darwin. Rent for a shared room typically ranges between AUD150 to AUD250 per week, making it appealing for students looking to cut living costs.
Pros
The area is near Charles Darwin University’s (CDU) Palmerston campus. Part-time job opportunities are available in retail, hospitality, and community services.
Cons
Public transport is limited to buses, and there is no subway or train system. Travel times to the city or other suburbs can feel long, especially outside peak hours.
Casuarina
Casuarina lies about 14 km north of Darwin’s city centre and is the hub for Charles Darwin University’s main campus. Rent for shared student housing starts at around AUD150 per week, while private studios can range from AUD250 to AUD350.

Pros
Its proximity to the university makes it ideal for students, with many able to walk or cycle to classes. Part-time jobs are available in nearby shopping centres, cafés, and campus facilities, providing reliable employment options.
Cons
Like Palmerston, Casuarina lacks a subway or train network. Students must rely on buses, which may not always be convenient.
Nakara
Nakara is a northern residential suburb of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia, located approximately 11 to 13 kilometres from Darwin city centre. The drive from Nakara to the city takes about 13 minutes by car. Transportation in Nakara is well supported by public buses, with several bus lines running routes that serve the area.

Pros
Nakara is close to the CDU Casuarina campus, providing convenience for students attending classes, accessing university resources, and participating in campus activities without long commutes.
Cons
Although Nakara is relatively affordable compared to some Darwin suburbs, overall living expenses in Darwin can still be high due to the city's remote location.
Rapid Creek
Rapid Creek lies north of Darwin’s central area. It blends lush green spaces, community markets, and proximity to the coast and Charles Darwin University.

Pros
This suburb offers an inviting mix of affordability, community spirit, and natural beauty. With lush parks, the popular Sunday Rapid Creek Markets, and access to dining options, it’s a good choice for students seeking a relaxed and sociable lifestyle close to the university.
Cons
Despite its charm, Rapid Creek is far from the core university buildings and central amenities. Public transport exists but is less frequent, which may extend daily commutes—especially for evening classes or weekend trips.
Nightcliff
Nightcliff is a northern coastal suburb of Darwin, known for its relaxed beachside atmosphere, weekend markets, and cafés along the foreshore.

Pros
The suburb is affordable for students, with shared rooms averaging around AUD230 per week and one-bedroom flats around AUD330. It is close to Charles Darwin University and well-connected to the city by bus. The foreshore also provides a peaceful space for walks and study breaks.
Cons
Nightcliff is quieter than central areas and has fewer social or cultural activities. Some residents have also noted minor safety concerns at times, which may make it less appealing for those seeking a lively environment.
