Former chief justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana has been arrested, the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office said on Sunday.

Rana was arrested at his residence in Maharajgunj, a senior police source confirmed. Further details were not immediately available.

Rana became chief justice on January 1, 2019. An impeachment motion was registered against him in Parliament on February 13, 2022, following which he was suspended.

The impeachment motion remained pending in Parliament for an extended period. After Parliament's session ended, the then secretary-general of the Federal Parliament Secretariat wrote a letter declaring the impeachment inactive.

A writ petition was then filed at the Supreme Court challenging the letter issued by the then secretary-general.

On September 9, the Supreme Court's Constitutional Bench ruled that the impeachment motion against Rana had lost its purpose and dismissed the petition.

The four-member Constitutional Bench, led by Chief Justice Manoj Kumar Sharma, issued the ruling dismissing four writ petitions related to the case.
