A man and his teenage daughter were killed after an irrigation canal embankment collapsed and buried a grain storage shed in Bhatbesi of Madhya Nepal Municipality-7, Lamjung, in the early hours of Tuesday.

The incident occurred at around 2:35am when the canal, which carries water from the Chiti stream to Bhatbesi, gave way, burying a two-storey mud-and-stone granary owned by resident Bishnu Datta Subedi.

According to police, 59-year-old Tik Bahadur BK of Nayu, Marsyangdi Rural Municipality-1, and his 15-year-old daughter, Binita BK, who had been living temporarily in the granary, were trapped under the debris. Both later succumbed to their injuries.

Tik Bahadur’s wife, 50-year-old Sukamaya BK, and another daughter, 16-year-old Asmita BK, were injured in the collapse, police said.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Jitendra Kumar Basnet, chief of the District Police Office, Lamjung, said the victims were rescued from the debris and rushed to Pokhara Academy of Health Sciences' Western Regional Hospital in Pokhara, where doctors pronounced Tik Bahadur and Binita dead during treatment at around 5:55am on Tuesday.

According to Basnet, Sukamaya and Asmita are undergoing treatment at the same hospital. He said Asmita sustained minor injuries, while Sukamaya's condition is moderate.

Following the incident, an 11-member police team led by Inspector Dhruba Prasad Sharma from the Bhorletar Area Police Office reached the site, rescued the victims and took them to Chisankhu Health Post in Rambazar for initial treatment before referring them to Pokhara.

According to Sharma, the BK family had been living in Subedi's granary since last November. They worked for the Subedi family, cultivated land under a sharecropping arrangement and also earned a living as daily wage labourers.

The incident site is about 10 kilometres west of the Bhorletar Area Police Office. Police said further investigation into the incident is underway.
