Kathmandu bans Holi stage shows, caps night businesses ahead of polls
Night-time businesses capped at 9pm from Monday.Post Report
The District Administration Office, Kathmandu, has imposed a blanket ban on setting up stages, organising musical events and holding fairs in public places during Holi on Monday.
The decision comes ahead of Thursday’s House of Representatives election, citing security concerns and enforcement of the election code of conduct.
In a notice issued by Assistant Chief District Officer Muktiram Rijal, the administration said Holi could be misused for political campaigning in violation of the code. It has stepped up monitoring.
The notice bars the use of vests, T-shirts, shirts, scarves, caps, masks or lockets bearing election symbols or images of political parties or candidates.
Public gatherings, stage programmes and any unruly activities resembling election campaigning have also been prohibited. The administration said such acts could disrupt law and order and affect the fairness of the polls.
It also warned against throwing colours or water at anyone without consent, hurling balloons, and consuming alcohol in a way that disturbs public order.
The office has urged people to celebrate within their homes or compounds with family members without infringing on others’ rights.
In a separate notice, the District Administration Office said all night-time businesses in Kathmandu district must close by 9pm from Monday until further notice to ensure election security.
