The family of a 23-year-old woman, who was severely beaten for refusing a marriage proposal in Bhimdatta Municipality, Kanchanpur, registered an attempted murder case against two persons at the District Police Office on Thursday.
Rakesh Chand of Bhimdatta-11 had tried to gouge out the eyes of Sunita Chand and poured hot ghee over her body for refusing his marriage proposal on Wednesday, police said.
Sunita’s brother Samir has filed attempted murder case against Rakesh and another man, identified as Ramesh Bhatta. Ramesh, who had allegedly helped Rakesh escape to India following the incident, was arrested from Gaddachowki on Wednesday itself.
Superintendent of Police Dilliraj Bista said they are trying to locate the whereabouts of Rakesh, who is believed to be hiding in India. Sunita’s condition is still serious, according to her uncle, Janak Bahadur. Doctors have been unable to treat her eyes because the swelling has not subsided yet, he added.
The doctors at Geta Eye Hospital in Dhangadhi have advised her to visit on Friday. Sunita is currently admitted to Mahakali Zonal Hospital where she is being treated for burn injuries in her face and body. Rakesh, who is already married, had been pursuing and harassing Sunita for a long time, police said. He had also assaulted her some three months back for turning down his marriage offer.
The case had reached the police at that time as well, but Rakesh continued to stalk Sunita. On Wednesday, Rakesh reached Sunita’s home and demanded that she elope with him. But when the latter refused, he started attacking her. Rakesh also attacked Sunita’s mother, who was also home at the time.
