The Act on the Elections for President and Vice President-2017 has authorized the election body to set the elections date for presidential and vice-presidential elections. As per Clause 4 (2) of the Act, the EC has to hold the presidential election within a month of the formation of the House of Representatives and Provincial Assemblies.
A meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Ayodhee Prasad Yadav set the election date after consulting with Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and leaders of political parties, the poll body said in a statement on Thursday.
“The elections will be held from 10am to 3pm on March 13,” the statement says. The EC also decided to notify the Cabinet about the election date. As per the EC schedule, the voters’ list will be published on March 5 and complaints against any voters could be registered on the same date.
On March 7, candidates will file nomination papers and their names will be published on the same day. The final list of candidates will be published on the March 8. The EC has planned to start the vote count from 4pm on March 13.
As per the law, members of the federal parliament (House of Representatives and National Assembly) and the members of Provincial Assembles can cast vote in presidential election. There are 334 members of the federal parliament and 550 members of provincial assemblies.
