Nepal on Wednesday reopened Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport, the country’s key gateway, after nearly 24 hours of closure due to security fears triggered by protests launched by Generation Z demonstrators.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal said in a statement, “Due to various circumstances, flights had been suspended on Tuesday. As per the decision made in the meeting of the Tribhuvan International Aviation Security Management Committee held today, it has been decided to resume operations.”
The notice further advised passengers to contact their respective airlines for updated flight schedules before heading to the airport and to carry official air tickets along with valid identification documents.
The shutdown left hundreds of passengers stranded, particularly Nepalis returning home for the upcoming festive season, airline companies said. The autumn period—September to November—is one of Nepal’s busiest travel seasons, attracting around a third of a million tourists annually, second after the spring season.
Meanwhile, Buddha Air announced that its domestic operations will resume from early Thursday morning.
