A recent government study of 46,266 students from government and private schools shows teachers’ children perform the best compared with other professions.Teachers’ children had average achievements of 529 where 500 is the average performance on a scale ranging from zero to 1,000.
The study results announced by the Ministry of Education’s Education Review Office show children of mothers who only do household chores performed the least with 491.
Interestingly, the impact of the mother whose profession is teaching is ahead than the impact of father who is a teacher. The performance of the children whose fathers are teachers is 517 against 529 of those whose mothers are the teachers.
The study included 1,950 public and private schools in 26 districts representing all seven provinces. It followed a multi-stage sampling technique and Item Response Theory where 500 is the mean value of performance. The ERO does such studies among three, five and eight grades since 2011.
ERO Director and lead researcher of the study Lekhnath Poudel said, “Children from families of educated mothers whether or not she is into any profession are the highest among others.”
The report reveals interesting information that children who help in household chores and watch television for limited hours perform better than those who do not help at home or do not watch TV. Those who watched TV between one to two hours scored the highest with 516, while those did not watch TV at all scored 489, the same as those who watched TV for more than four hours.
Schoolchildren who spent around one hour supporting parents in their work had the highest performance with 509 score against 504 of those who did not work at all. Children who worked for long hours, more than four hours, performed poorly with a score of 479.
The report reveals that 43 percent of students experienced some kind of bullying in the schools. Three percent students suffered extreme forms of bullying, 11 per cent suffered low level and 33 per cent suffered medium level of bullying.
