US Marine copter crash: Probe panel blames bad weather
The joint task force formed to investigate the crash of US military helicopter in Gorthali of Sindhupalchok on May 12 has blamed the geography and inclement weather for the mishap.Ekantipur Report
The UH-1Y Huey of US Marine suddenly entered into the Instrument Meteorological Condition (IMC) and crashed on the western side of 11,200 ft high Kalinchok Mountain in Sindhupalchok while helping with the rescue and relief distribution following the Great Earthquake of April 25, stated a report tabled on Friday by the task force under Nepal Army Brigadier General Pilot Sudheer Shrestha.
Six US marines, two Nepal Army soldiers and five survivors of earthquake were killed in the crash.
Shrestha handed over the report to Minister for Culture Tourism and Civil Aviation Kripasur Sherpa today.
A 15-member joint task force comprising experts from Nepali and USA was formed on May 20 at the direction of Chief of Army Staff Gaurav SJB Rana, said a press statement issued by Nepal Army today.
The taskforce initiated their investigation into the crash from the very next day and submitted their report on Friday. The probe panel has recommended certain safety measures in order to avert such accident in the future.
