UML to table power-sharing deal if NC fails
CPN-UML, the second largest party in the Constituent Assembly, has warned of floating its own power-sharing deal if the Nepali Congress fails to do so in the capacity of the largest party.UML leaders, however, said they will wait until the NC expresses its inability to table a proposal. Rejecting the idea to form a majority government, UML leaders say they will come up with a consensus proposal if the NC's bid to forge such government turns futile.
"As the largest party, the NC has the right to claim government leadership. The power-sharing proposal should be able to meet the expectations of major parties as per their strength in the CA,” said UML leader Yubaraj Gyawali.
Gyawali said his party would not wait forever if NC delays in tabling a proposal even after the first session of the CA on January 22. So far the UML is for a national consensus government led by the NC.
UML leaders believe internal bickering in the NC may provide opportunity for them to present a power-sharing deal or lead the government. The top three leaders of the NC—President Sushil Koirala, Vice-president Ram Chandra Poudel and senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba—have claimed the post of prime minister after the party emerged the largest after the November election.
The UML is for sharing the top posts of President, Vice President, prime minister, Speaker and constitutional committee chairperson among the major parties as per their new strength. UML's recent Central Committee meeting confirmed the idea.
The UML has staked its claim to the presidential berth and has been advocating new election for the head of state.
