Here are the major highlights of day 14 of the Paris Olympics 2024:
Football:
Spain secured the gold medal in the Olympic men’s football tournament after substitute Sergio Camello scored twice in extra time to earn a dramatic 5-3 win over hosts France in a nail-biting final at Parc des Princes on Friday.
The teams were locked at 3-3 at the end of normal time but Camello scored 10 minutes into the extra period.
Earlier Morocco claimed the bronze medal in the Olympic men’sfootball tournament with a crushing 6-0 win over Egypt thanks to Soufiane Rahimi's double and goals from Abde Ezzalzouli, Bilal El Khannouss, Akram Nakach and Achraf Hakimi in Nantes on Thursday.
Swimming:
Hungary’s Kristof Rasovszky won the men’s 10km marathon swimming gold at the Olympics on Friday, holding off German silver medallist Oliver Klemet in a gruelling slog along the final length of the Seine River.
David Betlehem won bronze for Hungary.
Sailing:
Valentin Bontus foiled to men’s kiteboarding gold on Friday, seizing Austria’s second sailing victory, with Toni Vodisek of Slovenia securing silver and Singapore’s Max Maeder bronze.
Climbing:
Britain’s Toby Roberts clinched the boulder and lead gold medal at the Paris Games on Friday with a total of 155.2 points combined.
In a nail-biting Roberts overtook Anraku’s 145.4. Austria’s veteran climber Jakob Schubert earned bronze with 139.6.
Canoeing:
China won the gold medal in the women’s canoe double 500-metre final at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium.
Ukraine came second to secure the silver medal, with Canada picking up the bronze.
New Zealand won Olympic gold in the women’s kayak double 500m on Friday.
Hungary came in second to secure the silver medal, with Germany originally declared third. After a lengthy review, they were found to have tied with the second Hungarian crew, who also received a bronze medal.
Meanwhile, Germany won Olympic gold in the men’s kayak double 500m final at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium.
Hungary came in second to secure the silver medal, with Australia picking up the bronze.
Martin Fuksa of the Czech Republic won gold in the men’s canoe single 1,000m final on Friday.
Brazil’s Isaquias Queiroz came in second to secure the silver medal, with Serghei Tarnovischi of Moldova picking up the bronze.
Diving:
China’s Chen Yiwen won the gold medal in the women’s 3-metre springboard on Friday to finish off 376 points, extending China’s winning streak in the 2024 Games diving events to seven.
Australia's Maddison Keeney took silver and China's Chang Yani won the bronze medal.
Table Tennis:
China successfully defended their Olympic men’s team title after beating Sweden in three nail-biting matches on Friday as Ma Long cemented his status as one of his country’s athletes.
French teenager Felix Lebrun, who made history by winning the first bronze in table tennis singles for France since 2000, added another bronze to the host nation’s delight.
Weightlifting:
Bulgaria’s Karlos Nasar raised the roof of the Paris Expo with a world record-breaking performance to take the men’s 89kg Olympic weightlifting title at the Paris Games on Friday with a total of 404kg.
Yeison Lopez of Colombia took the silver medal with a 390kg total and Italy’s Antonino Pizzolato won bronze with 384kg.
American Olivia Reeves put in a dominant performance to win the women’s 71kg weightlifting title at the Paris Games on Friday with a total lift of 262kg.
Colombia’s Mari Sanchez took silver with a total of 257kg as Angie Paola Palacios of Ecuador narrowly missed out on second place and had to settle for bronze with a total of 256kg.
Cycling:
Dutchman Harrie Lavreysen on Friday retained his Olympic men’s sprint title dominantly.
Australia’s Matthew Richardson secured silver while Jack Carlin of Britain took bronze.
Chiara Consonni and Vittoria Guazzini seized their opportunity late on with an audacious move taking them from mid-ranking on the leaderboard to the gold medal on women’s Madison on Friday.
Britain’s reigning world champions Elinor Barker and Neah Evans poured on the power in the last three laps to secure silver.
The Netherlands team of Maike van der Duin and Lisa van Belle took bronze.
Beach Volleyball:
Brazil’s Ana Patricia Ramos and Duda Lisboa beat Canada’s Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson 2-1 to win the Olympic women’s beach volleyball gold at the iconic venue in front of the Eiffel Tower on Friday.
In the bronze medal match, Switzerland’s Tanja Huberli and Nina Brunner beat Australia’s silver medallists from Tokyo, Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Taliqua Clancy, in straight sets.
Breaking:
Japan’s Ami Yuasa blended artistry and athleticism to win a battle against Lithuania’s Dominika Banevic and dance her way to the first Olympic gold medal ever awarded for breaking on Friday.
China’s Liu Qingyi, B-Girl 671, took bronze after overpowering India Sardjoe, B-Girl India, 2-1.
Wrestling:
Powerhouse Japan claimed two of Friday’s three freestyle wrestling gold medals at the Paris Olympics through Rei Higuchi and Tsugumi Sakurai.
Higuchi won the men’s 57kg freestyle gold with a 4-2 win against American Spencer Lee to banish memories of missing the home Olympics in Tokyo three years ago after he was found to be overweight in a qualifying tournament.
India’s Aman Sehrawat and Gulomjon Abdullaev of Uzbekistan took bronze.
Bulgaria’s Magomed Ramazanov won the men’s 86kg gold against an injured Hassan Yazdani of Iran, who settled for silver.
Dauren Kurugliev of Greece and Aaron Marquel Brooks of America took bronze.
Three-time world champion Sakurai won the women’s 57kg gold with a 6-0 win against Anastasia Nichita of Moldova, who settled for silver.
Helen Maroulis of America and Hong Kexin of China claimed the Olympic bronze.
Athletics:
The United States raced to the gold medal in the Olympic women’s 4x100 metres relay on Friday.
The US team of Melissa Jefferson, Twanisha Terry, Paris Olympic 200m champion Gabby Thomas and Sha’Carri Richardson clocked 41.78 seconds after getting the baton around the track with no major mishaps.
Britain brought silver home in 41.85 for silver and Germany claimed bronze in 41.97.
Germany’s Yemisi Ogunleye won the gold medal with her final throw of 20.00 metres in the Olympic women’s shot put on Friday, edging a thrilling duel with New Zealand’s Maddison-Lee Wesche, who settled for silver.
China’s Song Jiayuan with 19.32m claimed bronze.
Canada won the men’s Olympic 4x100m relay for the second time on Friday in 37.50 seconds, after hot favourites the United States messed up a changeover yet again and were disqualified.
South Africa took silver with a time of 37.57 while Britain’s team took bronze in 37.61 seconds.
Dominican Republic’s Marileidy Paulino surged to victory in the women’s 400 metres to add Olympic gold to her world title on a rainy night at the Stade de France on Friday.
Bahrain’s Salwa Eid Naser took silver and Poland's Natalia Kaczmarek earned the bronze.
Spain’s Jordan Diaz won gold in the men’s triple jump on Friday, securing his country’s first-ever Olympic medal in the event with 17.86 metres.
Defending champion Pedro Pichardo of Portugal had to settle for silver with a jump of 17.81m.
Italy’s Andy Diaz Hernandez, who is also originally Cuban but took Italian nationality, won bronze with a 17.64m jump.
Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet surged to the Olympic women’s 10,000 metres gold medal in 30 minutes 43.25 seconds on Friday to add to her 5,000 title at the Games.
Italian Nadia Battocletti earned sweet redemption after just missing the podium in the 5,000m, took silver in 30:43.35, and Dutchwoman Sifan Hassan failed to defend her Tokyo crown as she finished third in 30:44.12.
United States’ Rai Benjamin finally got the better of great rival Karsten Warholm to win the Olympic men’s 400-meter hurdles title on Friday to retain the title in 46.46 seconds.
World record holder Warholm, who has struggled to hit those stratospheric levels this season, battled all the way home for silver in 47.06.
Brazilian Alison dos Santos, who took bronze in Tokyo but made Friday’s final only as a fast loser, got the bronze again in 47.26 as the three quickest men ever to run the event filled the podium.
Hockey:
The Netherlands survived a major scare to beat China 3-1 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in regulation to retain their women’s hockey title at the Paris Olympics.
Argentina beat Belgium 3-1 on penalties to win the bronze medal after a 2-2 draw in regulation time to secure bronze.
Taekwondo:
Teenager Viviana Marton capped the gold medal in the women’s 67 kg taekwondo welterweight division at the Paris Games on Friday, winning Hungary’s first Olympic medal in the sport.
Marton dominated Serbia’s Aleksandra Perisic 7-1 4-2, clinching victory with a kick to the body.
American fighter Kristina Teachout and Sarah Chaari of Belgium earned bronze.
Tunisia’s Firas Katoussi won the Olympic gold medal in the men’s taekwondo welterweight (-80kg) division in Paris on Friday, beating Iran’s Mehran Barkhordari who claimed silver.
Katoussi defeated Barkhordari in two rounds, scoring 4-2 5-1.
Italy’s Simone Alessio and Denmark’s Edi Hrnic won the bronze medals.
Boxing:
Asadkhuja Muydinkhujaev and Lazizbek Mullojonov won gold on Friday as Uzbekistan took the lead in the boxing medal tally for the Paris Olympics.
American Omari Jones and Lewis Richardson of Britain took bronze after their semi-final defeats.
China’s Wu Yu got victory over Turkey’s Buse Naz Cakiroglu in the women’s 50 kg flyweight final.
Wu fought with real ferocity to beat Tokyo silver medallist Cakiroglu by a 4-1 decision.
Uzbekistan’s Lazizbek Mullojonov won gold in the men’s heavyweight boxing by unanimous decision at the Olympics on Friday, leaving Azerbaijan’s Loren Alfonso with silver.
Tajikistan’s Davlat Boltaev and Enmanuel Reyes of Spain took bronze after their semi-final defeats.
Algeria’s Imane Khelif, the female boxer thrust into the centre of a gender dispute at the Paris Games, made a statement on her womanhood after beating China’s Yang Liu to take the women’s welterweight Olympic gold medal, sending her newfound devotees into delirium on Friday.
Janjaem Suwannapheng of Thailand and Taiwan’s Chen Nien-chin were awarded bronze.
