Here are the major highlights of day 10 of the Paris Olympics 2024:
Surfing:
Kauli Vaast from France won the Paris 2024 Olympic men’s surfing gold medal on Monday at Teahupo’o in Tahiti.
Australia’s Jack Robinson won silver and Gabriel Medina from Brazil won bronze.
Caroline Marks of the United States won the Paris Olympics women’s surfing gold medal on Monday at Teahupo’o in Tahiti.
Brazil’s Tatiana Weston-Webb won silver and Johanne Defay of France took bronze.
Triathlon:
Germany’s mixed team of Hellwig Tim, Tertsch Lisa, Luehrs Lasse and Lindemann Laura won the gold in the triathlon mixed relay.
The USA team took silver while Britain secured the bronze medal.
Shooting:
Li Yuehong won the final gold of China’s shooting haul in the men’s 25-metre rapid-fire pistol with a comfortable 32-25 win against silver medallist Cho Yeong-jae of South Korea.
Li’s compatriot Wang Xinjie started off with a perfect five-from-five in the final securing bronze.
Italian pair Gabriele Rossetti and Diana Bacosi won the final shooting competition of the Paris Olympics in the inaugural mixed team skeet event on Monday.
American Vincent Hancock teamed up with another apprentice, Austen Smith, but had to settle for silver this time following their 45-44 loss.
China won bronze after Jiang Yiting combined with Lyu Jianlin for a 44-43 win against the Indian pair of Maheshwari Chauhan and Anant Jeet Singh Naruka.
Badminton:
South Korea’s An Se-young beat He Bingjiao of China 21-13 21-16 to capture the badminton women’s singles Olympic gold medal, while Denmark's Viktor Axelsen defeated Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand, 11-21 11-21, to successfully defend the men’s single title.
Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia bagged the bronze after defeating India’s Lakshya Sen, 13-21 21-16 21-11, at the Port de La Chapelle Arena in Paris on Monday.
Indonesia's Gregoria Tunjung took the women's singles bronze by default as her would-be opponent, Spain's Carolina Marin, was forced to retire midway through her women's singles semi-final against China's He on Sunday with what appeared to be a serious knee injury.
Gymnastics:
Japan’s Shinnosuke Oka won his third gold medal of the Paris Games on the men’s horizontal bar in a final riddled with mistakes on Monday. He stuck his landing for a score of 14.533.
Colombian teenager Angel Barajas took silver and Taiwan’s Tang Chia-hung and China’s Zhang Boheng shared bronze.
China’s Zou Jingyuan beat his rivals to retain the Olympic men’s parallel bars title.
The 26-year-old, nicknamed ‘king of parallel bars’ for his dominance on the apparatus, earned a staggering 16.200 points, head and shoulders above the rest.
Illia Kovtun took silver with 15.500, earning Ukraine their first podium finish in the sport in Paris.
Japan’s Shinnosuke Oka, who won gold in the team and all-around events, took the bronze with 15.300.
Italy’s Alice D’Amato won the gold medal in the women’s gymnastics balance beam event at the Paris Olympics on Monday.
D’Amato emerged triumphant with a score of 14.366 points.
China’s Zhou Yaqin won the silver medal with 14.100 points and D’Amato’s compatriot Manila Esposito finished third, 0.1 of a point behind her Chinese rival.
In the women’s floor exercise final Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade took gold with 14. 166 points. American Simone Biles took silver with 14.133, she lost the gold medal by just 0.033 points.
American Jordan Chiles took bronze with 13.766 points
Basketball:
Germany won gold in the women’s 3x3 basketball by beating Spain 17-16 in the final at the Paris Olympics on Monday.
Spain took silver and reigning champions the United States claimed the bronze medal after an earlier 16-13 win on Canada.
The Netherlands won gold in the men’s 3x3 basketball by beating France 18-17 in the final at the Paris Olympics on Monday.
France took silver and Lithuania claimed the bronze medal after an earlier 21-18 win over 2021 champions Latvia.
Canoeing:
Australia’s Noemie Fox won the gold medal in the Olympic women’s kayak cross at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium.
France’s Angele Hug took the silver medal, with Kimberley Woods picking up the bronze for Britain.
New Zealand’s Finn Butcher won the gold medal in the men’s kayak cross on Monday.
Britain’s Joe Clarke took the silver medal, with Noah Hegge picking up the bronze for Germany.
Athletics:
Sweden’s Mondo Duplantis broke his pole vault world record when he cleared 6.25 metres on the third attempt on Monday. He surpassed the 6.24 mark he set in April.
American Sam Kendricks got the silver and Greece’s Emmanouil Karalis took bronze.
Valarie Allman of the United States captured her second consecutive Olympic women’s discus throw gold medal on Monday, unleashing a 69.50-metre effort on her fourth throw.
China’s Feng Bin took silver with 67.51, while former double Olympic and world champion Sandra Elkasevic of Croatia also threw 67.51 but had to settle for bronze because Feng’s second-best effort topped the Croatian’s.
Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet won the women’s 5,000 metres as she delivered a textbook performance to outkick compatriot Faith Kipyegon, whose silver medal was reinstated after she had been controversially disqualified.
Chebet won in 14 minutes 28.56 seconds as the Netherlands’ Sifan Hassan (14:30.61) claimed silver and Italian Nadia Battocletti took bronze (14:31.64).
World champion Kipyegon had finished second in 14:29.60 but was disqualified after a clash with Ethiopian world record holder Gudaf Tsegay on the penultimate lap.
Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson produced a command performance to win the Olympic women’s 800 metres gold medal on Monday, crossing the line with tears in her eyes to claim her first global title.
The 22-year-old held her nerve, taking the lead halfway through the first lap and unleashing a fierce kick in the final straight to finish in one minute 56.72 seconds.
Tsige Duguma of Ethiopia won silver in a stunning Olympic debut, with world champion Mary Moraa of Kenya taking bronze.
Cycling:
Britain’s women blazed to gold in the Olympic track cycling team sprint with experienced Katy Marchant and Games debutants Sophie Capewell and Emma Finucane when they out-paced New Zealand with their third-world record-lowering ride at the National Velodrome on Monday.
New Zealand’s trio of Rebecca Petch, Shaane Fulton and Ellesse Andrews finished in 45.659 while world champions Germany took bronze after beating the Netherlands.
