Here are the major highlights of the events of day 9 of the Paris Olympics 2024:
Golf:
US world number one Scottie Scheffler won gold at the men’s golf competition on Sunday in a nail-biting final round to pip crowd favourite Tommy Fleetwood of Britain.
Scheffler shot a nine-under-par round of 62 to finish the tournament at 19-under-par, one shot ahead of Fleetwood who took silver on Le Golf National course.
Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama claimed the bronze medal.
Archery:
Kim Woo-jin completed a South Korean sweep of the Paris Olympic archery titles when he won the individual men’s gold on Sunday in a shoot-off against American Brady Ellison.
Ellison had to settle for the silver in the individual men’s event and South Korea’s Lee Woo-seok won the bronze.
Equestrian:
Jessica von Bredow-Werndl successfully defended her Olympic title in individual dressage on Sunday ahead of fellow German Isabell Werth.
Charlotte Fry won bronze, repeating the third place Britain achieved in the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
Tennis:
Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini claimed Italy’s first-ever Olympic tennis gold medal as they beat Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider 2-6 6-1 (10-7) to win the women’s doubles on Sunday.
Russians Andreeva and Shnaider, who were competing as neutrals, took the opening set but had to settle for silver after the Italian pair fought back.
Novak Djokovic completed his career Golden Slam as the 37-year-old Serb fought off Spain's Carlos Alcaraz in a magnificent Olympic men’s singles final battle at Roland Garros on Sunday.
In an earlier battle on Saturday Lorenzo Musetti of Italy took bronze.
Cycling:
American Kristen Faulkner won the women’s road race gold medal at the Paris Olympics on Sunday.
The US champion, along with Belgian Lotte Kopecky, caught the leading duo of Dutch great Marianne Vos and Hungarian Blanka Vas with 3.4km remaining and immediately produced a brutal acceleration.
Vos won the three-women sprint to take silver and Kopecky claimed the bronze.
Table Tennis:
China’s Fan Zhendong beat Sweden’s Truls Moregard in the Olympic men’s single table tennis singles final on Sunday.
Fan’s 4-1 victory adds to China’s gold-medal sweep in the sport so far at the Paris Olympics.
In the bronze match, 17-year-old Lebrun beat Brazilian Hugo Calderano to win France’s first table tennis medal since 2000.
Gymnastics:
Liu Yang flexed his muscles to successfully defend his Olympic title in the men’s rings final on Sunday, earning China their long-awaited first gold medal in gymnastics at the Paris Games.
The 29-year-old scored 15.300 points, edging out compatriot Zou Jingyuan’s 15.233.
Greece’s Eleftherios Petrounias, won the bronze medal with 15.100 - one-tenth of a point ahead of France’s Samir Ait Said, a crowd favourite and personal friend.
Algeria’s Kaylia Nemour became the first African gymnast to win an Olympic medal when she secured the gold with a breathtaking routine on the women’s uneven bar at the Paris Games on Sunday.
China’s Qiu Qiyuan, the 2023 world champion, took the silver, while American Sunisa Lee captured her second consecutive Olympic bronze on the apparatus with 14.800 points.
Carlos Edriel Yulo of the Philippines won his second gold medal in as many days after he soared to the top of the podium in the men’s vault at the Paris Olympics on Sunday.
The Armenian Artur Devtyan won silver, while Britain’s Harry Hepworth took the bronze at the Bercy Arena.
Badminton:
Taiwan’s Lee Yang and Wang Chi-Lin retained their Olympic badminton men’s doubles title on Sunday, beating China’s Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang 21-17 18-21 21-19 at the Porte de La Chapelle arena in a gripping final.
Malaysia’s Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik bagged bronze after winning 16-21 22-20 21-19 against Kim Astrup and Anders Rasmussen of Denmark.
Athletics:
Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikhwon the women’s high jump gold medal on Sunday, clearing 2.00 metres in front of an adoring crowd at the Stade de France.
Australian Nicola Olyslagers took silver and Ukraine’s Iryna Gerashchenko and Australian Eleanor Patterson shared the bronze.
Canada’s Ethan Katzberg won gold in the men’s hammer throw at the Paris Olympics on Sunday, cementing his dominance of the discipline after becoming the youngest-ever world champion last year.
Katzberg asserted himself with a first throw of 84.12 metres, and none of his rivals could respond.
Hungary’s Bence Halasz won silver with 79.97 and Ukraine’s Mykhaylo Kokhan won bronze with 79.39.
Noah Lyles won the closest-ever Olympic men’s 100-m final by five-thousandths of a second on Sunday to give the United States the title for the first time in 20 years.
In a blanket finish, Lyles believed he had left it too late to catch the powerful Kishane Thompson, but the giant screen confirmed him as the winner in a personal best of 9.79 seconds.
American Fred Kerley took bronze in 9.81.
Boxing:
As the two losing to the semi-finalists are automatically awarded bronze medals, Hasanboy Marfjon Ugli Dusmatov of Uzbekistan and Bilal Benama of France received bronze in men’s 51 kg.
Similarly, Canadian Wyatt Sanford and Lasha Guruli of Georgia took bronze in men’s 63.5 kg.
Cristian Javier Penales of the Dominican Republic and Arlen Lopez Cardona of Cuba took bronze in the men’s 80 kg category.
Emmanuel Reyes Pla of Spain and Davlat Boltaev of Tazakistan took bronze in men’s 92 kg.
Pang Cholmi of the Philippines and Im Aeji of Korea took bronze in women’s 54 kg.
Shooting:
Francisca Crovetto Chadid ended Chile’s two-decade-old wait for an Olympic gold with a dramatic shoot-off victory against Britain’s Amber Rutter in the women’s skeet event at the Paris Games on Sunday.
Austen Smith of the United States, mentored by four-time Olympic champion Vincent Hancock, took bronze.
Fencing:
Japan won the Olympic men’s foil team title for the first time, beating Italy in a thrilling bout at the Paris Games on Sunday, while France took the bronze to break the country’s Olympic medals post-war record.
Takahiro Shikine opened the scoring against Italy’s Tommaso Marini and Kazuki Iimura, who finished fourth in the individual event on Monday, delivered the final touches in a 45-36 win.
Swimming:
Sweden’s world record holder Sarah Sjostrom completed a remarkable freestyle sprint double by adding the women’s 50-metre freestyle gold to her 100m title in her fifth Games at the Paris Olympics on Sunday.
Australia’s Meg Harris, a gold medallist in the 4x100m free relay, took the silver and China’s Zhang Yufei secured the bronze.
American iron man Bobby Finke smashed the men’s 1,500-metre freestyle world record as he retained the Olympic gold medal in a thrilling swim that put the United States on top of the medal table at the Paris pool.
After 30 lung-busting laps, Finke touched the wall in 14 minutes, 30.67 seconds at La Defense Arena.
Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri took silver, 3.88 seconds behind Finke, with Daniel Wiffen, the 800m gold medallist, taking the bronze for Ireland.
The United States’ 64-year unbeaten run in the men’s 4x100 metres medley ended at the Paris Olympics on Sunday as China swept to a seismic win at La Defense Arena.
The team of Pan Zhanle, Xu Jiayu, Qin Haiyang and Sun Jiajun won in three minutes, 27.46 seconds.
Caeleb Dressel and the Americans took silver, 0.55 seconds behind the Chinese, while a Leon Marchand-powered France grabbed the bronze, finishing nearly a second behind.
The United States smashed their own world record in the women’s 4x100 medley on Sunday to close the Paris Olympics swimming meet with one last gold that lifted them clear of Australia at the top of the medals table.
Australia, who finished with seven swimming golds to the United States’ eight, took the silver at the La Defense Arena and China the bronze.
