Potholes on Pokhara–Baglung highway raise safety concerns
Commuters and transport operators call for urgent repairs as road conditions deteriorate.Post Report
Potholes along the Mid-Hill Highway, especially the Pokhara–Baglung stretch, are posing safety risks for drivers and passengers.
The highway, a crucial link between Pokhara and neighbouring districts, has deteriorated, causing delays and challenges for commuters and vehicle operators. Dammar K.C., a driver of an electric microbus on the route, said the road in Kaski and Parbat districts is in poor condition.
“Smooth and safe travel is currently impossible. In several places, the road has collapsed, some sections have large potholes, and parts have completely given way,” he said. “With heavy traffic on this main route, the risk of accidents is high. Without timely repairs, dust problems are likely to worsen during the winter.”
Lokesh Paudel, sub-engineer at the Pokhara Road Division Office, said last year’s monsoon had already caused extensive damage. “This year, road conditions have worsened. Contracts for regular maintenance have been finalised, with repair work planned for two main sections: Phendi to Nayapul in Kaski and Nayapul to Maldhunga in Parbat,” he said.
Shivalaya Construction Services has been awarded the maintenance contract. Although repair work was scheduled before the Dashain and Tihar festivals, rainfall and holiday breaks caused delays, Paudel said.
“The office will take all necessary measures to speed up repairs. However, the budget is limited, so not all damaged sections can be fixed at once. Work will focus on the most critical areas,” he added.
Travellers and transport operators have urged authorities to accelerate maintenance to prevent accidents and ensure safe passage, especially ahead of the winter tourist season.
