Nepal are playing their first match of the World Cup, which will be Nepal’s third participation in the main-event after 2014 and 2024, against England on February 8. The Rhinos will then face Italy, the West Indies and Bangladesh on February 12, 15 and 17, respectively.
There are three matches on the opening day of the World Cup on February 8. Pakistan, the West Indies and India will play the Netherlands, Bangladesh and the USA at SSC, Colombo; Eden Gardens, Kolkata; and Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, respectively.
The top two teams from each group will then progress to the Super 8 stage. The eight teams will then be divided into two groups of four each, with the top two teams from each advancing to the semi-finals.
Kolkata and Mumbai are expected to host the semi-finals with the Ahmedabad-based Narendra Modi Stadium, world’s largest cricket stadium, hosting the final on March 8. But if Pakistan are in the semis and final, Colombo will host it.
Welcoming the announcement of the schedule, ICC’s CEO Sanjog Gupta said, “With 20 teams from 5 continents vying for the title in cricket’s most unpredictable format and the tournament returning after a decade to its biggest market, this promises to be a feast for cricket fans around the world.”
Similarly, Rohit Sharma, an ICC Men’s T20 World Cup-winning captain and newly appointed ICC Brand Ambassador, said, “I have the good fortune of winning this tournament two times and can say from experience that each win in this tournament is a special one.”
He added, “I won the title in 2007 as a youngster and then lifted it as captain in 2024, but it is not just the final that I remember with as much fondness. Many other matches also stand out to me with equal fondness. In a World Cup, every match is big and a lot is at stake.”
Speaking at different occasions during the Nepal Premier League, CAN officials and senior players of the Nepali team have been stressing that the league will be a base on which Nepal will select the players for the World Cup.
