Nepal suffered a humiliating 86-run defeat in the Hong Kong T20I Series final against Papua New Guinea in Mong Kok on Wednesday following a batting collapse.
Chasing 172, Nepali batting looked out of depth and were bundled out for 85 runs in 16.3 overs—their fifth lowest T20I total.
The Rhinos were never in the contest in their chase, losing opener Binod Bhandari for four and Kushal Bhurtel for five, both to Kabua Morea.
Gulsan Jha and skipper Rohit Paudel also departed cheaply adding six and 12 respectively.
Aarif Sheikh and Sundeep Jora tried to steady the ship but Chad Soper halted the progress dismissing Jora for 15.
Bibek Yadav could not handle the bat before leaving for a 10-ball one, caught by Siaka off Soper.
Aarif Sheikh also struggled and returned to the dugout after scoring 20-ball 15, bowled by Sese Bau.
Nepal were 84-7 after 15 overs and lost the remaining wickets of Lokesh Bam, Pratis GC and Karan KC adding just one run.
A clinical bowling display saw PNG’s Morea, Semo Kamea, Soper, Bau took two wickets each. Alei Nao also picked a Nepal scalp.
Earlier, invited to bat first, PNG posted 171-8 in the allotted 20 overs with help from a half century from Tony Ura and an explosive batting from tailender Nao.
PNG had a horror start to their innings as they lost opener Bau for a golden duck to Karan KC.
Aakash Chand then took two quick wickets removing captain Assad Vala for two and Lega Siaka for 2—that plunged PNG to a troublesome 20-3 inside four overs.
Hiri Hiri batted aggressively hitting two fours and a six to Chand but could not last long and fell to Gulsan Jha adding 9–ball 15.
Opener Ura was fighting alone and finally found much needed support from Hila Vare as the duo added 48 runs for the fifth wicket to bring his team back into the game.
Vare walked back adding 18 runs off 21 balls after he was trapped leg in front by Bhurtel.
Ura completed his half-century with a four and a six off Yadav in the 13th over before eventually being dismissed for 37-ball 61 by Bhurtel. Ura hit five boundaries and four sixes.
PNG were 137-7 when Bhurtel removed Kiplin Doriga (14) for his third wicket of the innings but Nao hammered a quickfire 10-ball 30 to take his side to a challenging total.
Ura was named player of the match and player of the series.
Chand also took three wickets for Nepal.
