Nepal’s hopes to reach their first ever semi-finals of the U-19 Cricket World Cup ended without playing a game on Tuesday after India and Pakistan won their respective Super Six matches.
India thrashed New Zealand by 214 runs in Bloemfontein, South Africa to earn six points in Group 1 and put one foot in the last four, while Pakistan also kept afloat their hopes to make the semis with a three-wicket win over Ireland in Potchefstroom, with the victory giving them six points.
The outcome means, Nepal, who progressed as a third-placed team from Group D and have no points in Super Six Group 1, will now stand no chance of advancing even if they beat both Bangladesh and India in their upcoming fixtures. The teams carried forward their points and net run rate they earned against their fellow qualifying Super six teams.
Nepal had defeated Afghanistan by one wicket in their last group match to advance to the Super Six. They had lost to New Zealand by 64 runs in their opening match and suffered a five-wicket defeat against Pakistan in the second group match.
Nepal play Asian Champions and 2020 winners Bangladesh on Wednesday and defending champions and U-19 World Cup’s most successful side India on Friday. India are looking to win their sixth U-19 World Cup in the 15th edition.
Bangladesh, who have four points, are also in contention.
