Nepal exited from the Asian Games men’s cricket competition after they lost their quarter-final match to tournament debutants India by 23 runs at the Zhejiang University of Technology Cricket Field in Hangzhou, China on Tuesday.
India, who opted to bat first after winning the toss, posted 202-4 in the allotted 20 overs thanks to Yashasvi Jaiswal’s maiden T20 international century and late flurry from Rinku Singh and Shivam Dube.
Jaiswal, who muscled eight fours and seven sixes, also put on a century-run partnership with his opening partner Ruturaj Gaikwad, who scored 25 runs off 23 balls.
Dipendra Singh Airee broke India’s opening partnership dismissing Gaikwad in the 10th over, triggering a mini-collapse.
Spinners Sompal Kami and Sandeep Lamichhane choked the Indian run flow removing Tilak Varma (2) and Jitesh Sharma (5), but Jaiswal continued the assault and reached his hundred off 48 balls in the 16th over.
In the process, Jaiswal became India’s youngest T20I centurion at the age of 21 years, 279 days, eclipsing the feat achieved by Shubman Gill at the age of 23 years 146 days earlier this year.
Airee dismissed Jaiswal in the 16.2 overs, caught by Abinash Bohara.
But a terrific last-over show by Rinku Singh, who racked up 37 off 15 balls that featured two fours and two sixes, powered India to a big total.
Shivam Dube was not out on 25.
En route to the quarter-finals, Nepal had rewritten T20 cricket record books, defeating Mongolia by 273 runs—biggest win in men’s T20I by run margin—and also becoming the first men’s team to score more than 3oo in a T20I.
But Indian bowlers took the innings under their control and restricted Nepal to 179-9, with Avesh Khan and Ravi Bishoni taking three wickets each.
Opener Aasif Sheikh fell to Khan for 10 in the fourth over before Kushan Bhurtel departed scoring 28 off 32 balls in the ninth, caught by Khan off debutant Sai Kishore.
Kushal Malla, who scored the fastest men’s T20I century against Mongolia, contributed 29 runs facing 22 deliveries before falling victim to Bishoni in the 11th over.
Bishoni next sent back captain Rohit Paudel reducing Nepal to a miserable 77-4.
Airee—who scored the record fastest T20I half century against Mongolia—staged a fight back with his 15-ball 32 studded with three straight sixes off Shivam Dube in the 14th over. Sundeep Jora assisted Airee with his 12-ball 29.
But Bishoni halted Nepal’s recovery, dismissing Airee in the 15th over to complete his three-wicket haul.
Jora soon followed Airee back to the pavilion in the next over.
Karan KC did his best with an 18 off 13 balls.
India have fielded a second string side at the Games but their youngsters have shone in the Indian Premier League. India had progressed directly into the last eight by virtue of their ICC T20I rankings. Up next for India is either Bangladesh or Malaysia, who face off in the other quarter-final on Wednesday.
Pakistan also progressed into the semis with a 68-run victory over Hong Kong.
Sri Lanka and Afghanistan will battle for the other last-four spot also on Wednesday.
The semi-finals will take place on Friday.
The bronze-medal and gold medal matches are scheduled for Saturday.
