Nepal national women’s cricket team finished as Group A runners-up after their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Asia Region Qualifier match against the United Arab Emirates was abandoned without a ball bowled due to downpour in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Wednesday.
Nepal and the UAE—both on nine points after winning all four matches—had already secured their spots in the semi-finals.
They were meeting in their last group match that would decide the winners but heavy downpour forced the match to be called off, meaning Nepal finished their group campaign in the second position due to inferior net run rate.
The outcome means Nepal will face Group B winners Thailand in Friday’s semi-finals. Thailand topped their five-team group with a 43-run victory over Hong Kong. Thailand collected seven points from four matches.
Hong Kong ended as runners-up and set a date with the UAE in the other last-four match.
The two finalists will progress into the global qualifier of the 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
The other Group A matches between hosts Malaysia and Qatar, and Bahrain and Bhutan were also abandoned due to rain. In Group B, Kuwait defeated Myanmar by 7 runs to wrap up their Qualifier in the third position.
