Janakpur Royals, one of the six franchise teams of the Nepal T20 League, have signed Chadwick Walton as their foreign player.
The 37-year-old West Indies batter and wicket keeper brings the experience of two Test matches, 87 first class games, 90 list A matches and 175 T20 games to Nepal's first ever official Twenty20 league, which is slated to take place from December 23 to January 10, 2023.
“I am really excited to be a part of the Janakpur Royals franchise. I am eager to be in Nepal and I can’t wait to get acclimatized and play some exciting cricket,” said Chadwick Walton in a press release issued by the Janakpur Royals.
Walton has represented the West Indies in all three formats of men’s international cricket.
He made his Test debut against Bangladesh in July 9, 2009 in St Vincent, where he impressed behind the stumps, equaling Ridley Jacobs' record with five dismissals in an innings.
But his batting remained a serious concern for the national side. He managed only 13 runs in four innings in two Tests, 53 in eight ODI innings and 225 in 17 T20Is. He last represented West Indies in a T20I match against Bangladesh in August 2018.
Despite his poor outings with the national side, the right-handed batter has thrived in global leagues, representing more than eight teams across the world.
“I am excited to announce the signing of Chadwick Walton as a foreign player for the Royals for the upcoming season. He has vast experience globally, having played in Pakistan Super League, Lanka Premier League, Caribbean Premier League, Bangladesh Premier League, etc. I am hopeful that the Nepalese players will learn from his experience,” Janakpur team owner Govind Khandelwal said.
Walton is the Janakpur’s fifth overseas signing. Coach Umesh Patwal’s side have also brought Adam Lyth, Trevon Abishai Griffth, Raj Rocky Nannan and Subhashinge Priyanjan.
Janakpur begin their Nepal T20 campaign against Pokhara Avengers on December 24.
