Nepal women’s U-19 team wrapped up their U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup qualifying campaign with a 25-run win over hosts Malaysia on Thursday.
Electing to bat first after winning the toss, opener Anjali Bishwokarma smashed 33 runs off 54 balls and played a 58-run stand with Ashma Pulami Magar, who hit 26 off 38 balls, for the first wicket as Nepal posted 86-7 in the stipulated 20 overs.
Bishwokarma’s opening partner Kiran Kunwar was run out for duck. Shristi Jaisi, Sanu Rajbanshi and Anu Kadayat were out for 3 runs each while captain Kritika Marasini was out for just 1 run as Nepal’s batting struggled again losing five wickets for just 17 runs at the UKM-YSD Cricket Oval in Bangi.
Malaysia’s Nur Dania took two wickets giving away 14 runs in her four over spell. Captain Elsa Hunter pocketed a wicket for the hosts.
In response, Nepal restricted Malaysia to 61-4 in 20 overs to return home with a consolation win.
Skipper Marasini returned the match figures of 6-2 that included the prized scalp of Hunter, who had steadied the innings smacking 28 runs off 32 balls that included three fours, after openers Musfirah Nur Azmi and Dania departed cheaply for two and five runs, respectively.
But Hunter could not find support as Malaysia ended the campaign with a third loss.
Manisha Upadhyay also took a wicket for Nepal.
Nepal’s hopes to qualify for the South Africa finals had ended on Tuesday after they succumbed to a second loss after a 49-run mauling by Thailand. A third win in five matches puts Nepal in third position with six points.
Thailand’s bid for the 2023 World Cup also came to a heart-breaking end on Thursday after they lost to an unstoppable United Arab Emirates team by six wickets in the decisive match.
Both the teams had tied on eight points coming into the final round at the Kinrara Oval in Kuala Lumpur and were one win away from the global showpiece.
Electing to bat first, Phannita Maya scored 40 runs of 39 balls that featured six fours to help Thailand post a target of 85 runs at the loss of eight wickets.
Nannaphat Chaihan (14) was the only other batter to score in double-digit figures for Thailand.
The UAE bowler Vaishnave Mahesh returned the figures of 2-16 that also included the wicket of Maya.
UAE opener Lavanya Keny was out for a six-ball duck. But her opening partner and captain Theertha Satish hit not out 38 and played a 53-run partnership with Vaishnave Mahesh (21) for the third wicket after Samaira Dharnidharka was out for 13.
Nanthita Boonsukham had Mahesh caught by Onauma Senanok in the 16th over but the UAE reached the target and topped the table with eight points to book their ticket to the inaugural World Cup.
Qatar also finished their campaign with a seven-wicket win over winless Bhutan. This was Qatar’s first win.
