Nepal U-19 team succumb to 89-run loss

Nepal U-19 national cricket team lost to Chilaw Marians Club by 89 runs in a friendly match in Colombo on Friday.
Chasing 225-run taget, the touring team collapsed to 135 runs in 40.3 overs. It was Nepal's third warm-up match with the local Sri Lankan team ahead of their ACC U-19 Asia Cup scheduled for September 5-14 in Colombo. Nepal came into the match with a 84-run win over Baduraliya Cricket Club on Thursday. They lost to U-23 Sinhalese Sports Club by three wickets in their first match in Colombo.
Put into bat first Marians posted 224-8 in 50 overs with a collective batting effort. Nepal were bowled out for 135 runs in 40.3 overs.
Mohammad Asif Sheikh top scored for Nepal with a painstaking 44 runs. Sheikh struck four boundaries in his 84-ball knock. Bhim Sharki contributed a battling 26 off 55 balls and Rit Gautam made 25 off 45 deliveries. Naveen Gunawardana and Sheshan Silva claimed three wickets each while Dilshan Sanjeewa took two wickets for the local team.
Earlier, Marians had five of their batsmen to thank for to post a competitive total on the board. Suhaga Wijewarnena top scored with 56 runs, his 90-ball innings included six hits to the fence. Dasun Seneviratne (36), Sanoj Darshika (32), Lasith Croospulle (26) and Kavindu Dinesh (25 not out) helped swelled the Marians' total. Surya Tamang and Pawan Sarraf claimed two wickets each while Kamal Singh Airee, Rashid Khan and Sagar Dhakal snared one wicket each for Nepal.
Nepal are drawn in Group 'B' against the hosts Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and the United Arab Emirates in the ACC U-19 Asia Cup. The Group 'A' comprises of India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Kuwait. Nepal qualified for Asia Cup after winning the ACC U-19 Eastern cricket tournament in Kuala Lumpur in July. Nepal had reached the Asia Cup semi-final of the tournament in 2017, their best run in the tournament till date. It was the same year, Nepal defeated India for the first time to register their only victory so far against the cricketing giants.
