The journeys and struggles of 13 women leaders who have contributed to Nepal’s social movements have been brought together in a new research book, ‘Shared Dreams Woven by Struggle’, launched in Lalitpur on Friday.

The book, published by Voices of Women Media, documents the lives, struggles, and contributions of women who challenged discrimination, organised communities, and fought for rights, dignity, and social justice. Through their personal stories, it traces some of the social movements that have shaped Nepali society while drawing attention to the often-overlooked role of women in those struggles.

For instance, the book includes the story of Uma Devi Badi and her struggle for land, rights, and dignity as part of the Badi community’s rights movement. It also documents the journey of Muskan Khatun, who survived an acid attack and has continued her struggle for justice and dignity.

Some of the stories revisit the Sino Bahishkar Movement, which has gradually faded from public memory. The experiences of Mahari Devi, Bhola Devi and Chandeshwori Sada, who were involved in the movement, offer a glimpse into the courage of women who challenged caste-based discrimination and fought for equality and dignity.

Speaking at the launch, chief guest Sunita Dangol, acting mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, said documenting such histories was itself an important part of the struggle for women’s rights.

“We need to remember that until it is written, it won’t be written. Writing and documenting these experiences is a strong way to establish our own narrative in a society where women’s struggles and voices are questioned time and again,” she said.

Following the launch, a panel discussion titled ‘Women Leaders and Social Movements: Reflections and Practices’ brought together activists, academicians, researchers and representatives from different fields to reflect on women’s leadership and the continuing relevance of social movements.

The discussion was moderated by Hemlata Rai, a Women, Peace and Security expert. Panellists included Muna Shakya, disability rights advocate; Parbati BK, Member of the Federal Parliament of Nepal; Rita Baramu, writer, researcher and digital rights activist; and Jamuna Siwakoti, head of the Central Department of Gender Studies at Tribhuvan University.
