Post Report
Locals intervened in a protest by activist Iih in front of the Lalitpur Metropolitan City Office on Tuesday against a ban on street vending.
A brief scuffle occurred between locals and activists as the latter staged a protest. Police took hold of the situation a few minutes later. The activists had planned to stage a stand-in protest for 108 minutes from 3 pm.
The metropolis has banned street vending on Lagankhel-Mangalbazar road from Sunday, saying the sidewalk businesses were impeding the movement of people and traffic in historically significant areas.
Locals displayed banners stating the ban was appropriate.
Earlier in September, Iih staged a stand-in protest outside the metropolitan city office continuously for the past eight days, demanding that street vendors, who have been banned from running their businesses on the pavements of Kathmandu streets, be given an appropriate alternative to run their businesses.
Here are photos of the protest captured by the Post’s photojournalist Sanjog Manandhar.
