Buffalo may be the most popular meat in Nepal, followed by goat, chicken and pig. But when it comes to Dashain, mutton might still be the king.

In the villages, almost every household has at least one goat kept specially for Dashain. But in the cities, it’s a different story.

As the festival approaches, traders flock to bigger cities with thousands of goats and command a handsome price from customers who are impatiently looking to take home one for the feast.

Apart from traders, the government-run Food Management & Trading Company also sells goats, sheep and mountain goats to meet the meat demand during the festival.

Take a stroll in the market, and you’ll know it’s Dashain because there are goats everywhere.
