Nepal’s Kami in Asian Games Select Team
Nepal’s rising fast bowling sensation Som Pal Kami has been named in the Men’s 2014 Asian Games Select Team announced by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) on Saturday.Kami shares the spot in the Select Team with some of the renowned names in world cricket – Sri Lanka’s Upul Tharanga, Lahiru Thirimane along with Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal and Mashrafe Mortaza.
The 12-member Select Teams in men’s and women’s section were prepared by ACC Development Officers, Aminul Islam, Venkatpathi Raju, Rumesh Ratnayake and Iqbal Sikander following a request from ACC President Jayantha Dharmadasa.
The men’s team, headed by Thirimane, also includes Dinesh Chandimal and Jeevan Mendis of Sri Lanka, Mashrafe Mortaza of Bangladesh, Mohammed Nabi of Afghanistan, Ahmed Faiz of Malaysia, Nadeem Ahmed and Waqas Barkat (12th man) of Hong Kong. Pakistan’s Sana Mir leads the Women’s Select Team. No Nepali woman cricketer has sneaked through in the Select Team.
Kami had taken five wickets in the Asian Games held in Incheon from September 19 to October 4. He took 3-4 against Kuwait, 1-6 against Maldives and 1-10 against Afghanistan. Kami, who made a sensational entry into the senior national team while he was preparing for the ACC U-19 Asia Cup, is dubbed the new generation of Nepali fast bowling
Three months after he had landed in Nepal from India, he represented the senior team in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers in New Zealand in January this year. His performance was phenomenal in the ICC World Twenty20 held in Bangladesh earlier this year.
Nepal had crashed out from the quarter-finals of the Asian Games where they lost to Afghanistan by eight runs. Afghanistan later lost to Sri Lanka in the gold medal match. Pakistan had won the women’s gold defeating Bangladesh by four runs under the Duckworth/Lewis Method.
