Gurung sets new 100m freestyle national record
Sirish Gurung of Nepal Police Club (NPC) shattered the 25-year-old 100m freestyle national record during the fourth NSA Cup Swimming Championships here on Monday.Gurung swam the distance in 58.55 to break the previous best mark of 58.84 set by Ananda Lepcha during the fifth South Asian Games in Islamabad in 1989. Miraj Prajapati of Tribhuvan Army Club (TAC) and Debesh Manandhar of SVI finished second and third respectively.
Gurung, who won gold in 50m freestyle on the previous day, ended the meet with three gold medals after also adding the 400m freestyle (5:05.43) title. Manandhar and Bishan Chhetri of TAC came home second and third respectively. Manandhar, who won three gold medals the opening day, added 200m individual medley (2:46.56) and 200m backstroke (2:53.11) titles on Monday.
Armymen clean swept the 100m breaststroke with Kiran Karki (1:19.98) finishing ahead of Rupesh Chaudhary and Tikaram Tharu. Dilip Thapa Magar gave TAC another gold in men’s 50m butterfly (30.99). Jayanta Prakash Gurung of Marigold Club and Janak Rai of TAC were second and third respectively.
In the women’s category, Sofia Shah of Lincoln School struck gold in 50m freestyle with the timings of 30.95. Sonira Bista of TAC bagged the 200m breaststroke (3:24.75) while Ashma Tamang of Pathshala and Aditi Dhital of Lincoln school won silver and bronze medals respectively.
In the age-group category, Nasir Hussain claimed gold in boys’ U-10 50m backstroke with the timings of 44.38. Abhishek Karki of Little Angles School came second followed by Luis Williams of The British School. Hussain won the 50m freestyle (35.59) gold.
Tenzing Lama of The British School prevailed in the girls’ U-12 50m butterfly final, winning the race in 40.27. Oshina Bharati of Lincoln claimed the 100m girls’ freestyle championship in 1:14.21. Anuskha Pokharel of Rato Bangala struck gold in U-10 girls’ 50m breaststroke with the timings of 52.84.
